Wilderlands of Ancient Legend (5E)
(The Extremely Brief Version)
This version of History is a rough outline, glossing over many important details and events, but is the most commonly agreed to history according to scholars and scribes
Long, long ago there was an ancient people now called Kambrians. Their vast kingdom stood for thousands of years before disaster destroyed it. The precise events leadin to the disaster, and the time period and events immediately after the disaster are lost. What happened, according to legend, is a betrayal by a great guardian known as Memmnamon. One of a few Titans, Memmnamon betrayed his brethren and the Kambrian people in service to dark and terrible Eldritch Gods long believed locked away for all time.
Memnamon’s betrayal ushered in an Age of Darkness that resulted in the loss of most Kambrian lore and technology. During the Age of Darkness strange horrors roamed the world and those few survivors of the betrayal fled in terror to the far reaches of the wrold or beneath it.
In time, according to legend (and the Skara Sidhe), the Tuahtha Dae defeated Memmnamon and ended the Age of Darkness. Memmnamon was too powerful for even the Tuatha Dae to destroy, so they used an Arcane ritual to force Memmnamon’s essence from his physical body, imprisoning each one in it’s own seperate prison specially created to hold the two parts of Memnamon.
Without Memmnamon and in the presence of the Tuatha Dae, the terrors of the Age of Darkness receded. The Empire of the Tuatha Sidhe was established in the aftermath, as was the Nak’kosh Empire. Both the Tuatha Sidhe and the Nak’kosh Empires fought for dominance and territory, with the Tuatha claiming significant portions of the Western continent and the Nak’kosh firmly establishing itself in the far eastern lands.
Between these two great empires arose the small Human kingdom of Barrakain. In time, as fortunes of both the Tuatha and Nak’kosh faltered, the Barrakain peoples would establish an Empire larger and more influential than either of the old empires. When the Tuatha Sidhe Empire split over internal political scheming and the Nak’kosh Empire imploded afcter a terrible Arcane event (in legend refered to as The Waking), The Barrakain Empire gobbled up much of the abandoned Tuatha and Nak’kosh territory.
The Barrakain Empire thrived even while the Nak’kosh faded from memory and the Tuatha Sidhe split into Seelie and Unseelie Courts (the Skara Sidhe Empire would be the center of the Seelie Court and Evernight the seat of the Unseelie Court). Eventually the Empire became too big and a series of wars with the Dragon-Kin (decendants of the old Nak’kosh Empire) devestated Barrakain. The Empire collapsed, with much of it’s eastern territoy (and also the old Nak’kosh Empire’s Western frontier) falling to control of the Dragon-kin.
To the far west, on the outskirts of the Barrakain Empire the territory of Kelnore declares independance from the failing Empire and due to strategic positioning (being close to Skara Sidhe and several independant Dwarven cities) is able to thrive and avoid destruction alongside Barrakain.
Over a few centuries, favorable diplomatic relations with the Skara Sidhe and Dwarves of the region allow the Kingdom of Kelnore to expand, eventually becoming it’s own Empire. This empire would further expand and thrive for over 1,000 years.
Now the Empire of Kelnore has become stagnant, with political corruption, infighting and machinations rotting the core of the Empire while threats from outside the Empire loom eagerly in it’s future.
